Questionable Treo 700p Review June 27, 2006

I just read Sascha Segan’s review of the Treo 700p in the “First Looks” section of the July PC Magazine. It mostly gets an Editor’s Choice rating because it’s the most easy to use handheld. I agree that it’s easy to use. Yet Segan also admits that it doesn’t multitask or have Wifi. These features are huge. Not having them is like buying an expensive Nike driver that hits ’em straight, but only hits ’em 100 yards. You can play golf that way, but it won’t be very effective or fun.

I disagree. Sure wifi is nice, but let us not forget all of the features that the treo does have. It is not a first time editor’s choice. The treo 300, 600, 650, and 700 have been consistent editor’s choice. This is because of the attention to usability! Consistently no one has come up with a more usable device! Like Magic Johnson…. in his day he wasn’t the best dribbler, passer, jump shooter, or rebounder! What made him one of the all-time bests was that he did a little bit of everything good! You can’t discount overall usability!

A little bit of everything good equals average. That’s what the Treo Palm-based hardware franchise has become: Average. Admittedly it’s average mostly because of the Palm OS. But it’s become more like Michael Jordan in his Washington Wizard final days: Lot’s of great memories, but the greatness is gone!
