Today’s USA Today describes the September release of the PC edition of ReplayTV. This sounds really promising! Finally there’s going be an easy method for getting video content from my DirecTV source to my PC where I can easily do to it what I want (like view in on another TV somewhere in my house) The present DirecTV/Tivo/DVR boxes are a joke when it comes to the ability to move content from the box (which is essentially a hard drive) to some other TV in my house; or to a computer.

RanMac,
You are truly a marketer’s dream! With the mention of a few features and some rewording, you jump right on the bandwagon with both feet! Here is a statement from Bill Loewenthal, ReplayTV’s VP/GM

….“For many consumers, their PCs are the center of their entertainment life for music photos and the Internet…..”

Give me a break! The reason that the mobile electronics industry is growing so rapidly is because people DON’T want their PC’s to be the center of their world!

In addition; here are the “special features” that they are promoting. MY COMMENTS WILL BE IN CAPS….

Surprise Me™: This fun and useful feature surprises viewers by automatically recording programming featuring favorite actors, directors and genres. “Surprise Me” is integrated throughout the experience, making it a valuable feature for all users.

SOUND FAMILIAR??? SOUNDS LIKE WISHLIST RECORDING, OR SUGGESTIONS TO ME. EVER HEARD OF TIVO???

Find More: This exciting feature lets you instantly discover other shows and movies that are similar in genre or feature the same actors or directors as the one you’re watching. Of course, you can have ReplayTV surprise you with other shows starring your favorite actor.

HELLO????? TIVO HAS BEEN MAKING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YEARS!

Useful Searches: Tired of scrolling through channel lineups to find what you want? A click of the button and you can see a list of “Primetime Shows,” “Series Premieres,” or “Series Finales.” Enjoy romantic comedies? Try searching by genre, movie title, by actors, or even directors!

NEED I SAY MORE?

Intelligent networking: Once you have ReplayTV PC Edition in your life, you’ll probably want it in every room where you have a PC. It’s easy to network multiple ReplayTV PC Edition PCs together, and when you do, ReplayTV consolidates the recorded shows from all ReplayTV PCs into a single view so your shows are easy to find and watch. And if you just want to view shows in an additional room, ReplayTV offers ReplayTV PC Companion for PCs without tuners.

NOW THIS IS NEAT, BUT HOW LONG DO YOU THINK CABLE AND SATELLITE TV COMPANIES WILL LET THIS GO ON?? YOU MEAN I NEED ON TV AND ON BOX AND I CAN WATCH ON AS MANY TVS AS I WANT??? DIDN’T REPLAY OVERSTEP THEIR BOUNDARIES BEFORE AND GET SLAPPED ON THE HAND??

Smart Channel Guide: ReplayTV PC Edition makes the Channel Guide work for you. You can place your favorite channels at the top of the guide so you can easily and quickly see what’s playing on them. You can always tell what’s being recorded because the time bar features a record indicator so you can plan what else you want to watch or record – with absolutely no guesswork.

YAWN, YAWN, YAWN….

IT MAY BE REVOLUTIONARY, BUT LET EM GET THROUGH THE BETA TEST BEFORE YOU START GOING BEZERK AND DISSING TIVO!

Tivo doesn’t need me to dis them. DirecTV already has. My recently purchased DirecTivo box isn’t a Tivo box. It’s a DirecTV-DVR. They don’t even support Tivo anymore.

As a consumer, the problem I have with this DVR box (and Tivo), is that the info contained on the box is only on the box. And there’s not an easy method for me (the consumer) to use it anywhere else. You’re correct in your assessment that ReplayTV for PC is essentially duplicating Tivo functionality on the PC. There’s one key difference. It’s on my PC. This is significant. It’s no different than having all of my music on my PC. Can you imagine today only having your music collection in a box hooked up to your stereo in your family room? No you cannot! Let’s stretch the power of the possibilities here. The profit and control interests of the cable and satellite companies is of no interest to me. I pay them for the use of their content. As long as I’m not reselling their content for my own profit motive (or give it away for to others), how I use their content is no business of theirs.

3. Tell it like it TI is! - June 29, 2006

Slow down, Fast Follower! I have read all of the reviews and nowhere does it states that any of the programs are “on your computer”. Take a look at how carefully the wording is phrased. Never any mention of converting programs to files, exporting or importing, etc. This is simply being presented as the next-generation DVR PC software offering TV enthusiasts the Ultimate DVR Experience…..

– lightning-fast and powerful new program search tools
– a simple and intuitive interface
-multi-room networking capabilities
– etc.

Make sure you know who and what you are following! Here is a quote for you…

There is an evil tendency underlying all our technology – the tendency to do what is reasonable even when it isn’t any good.
